Heya! I’m Dave. I’m a product designer, engineer, PM, and team lead who works at Automattic.

Calm life

This is what I aspire to, but it might not actually exist. At least not the way I imagine it.

My life does not currently feel calm. I’d describe it more as hectic and borderline chaotic.

I was speaking with my friend Michael Pick this morning and he shared:

Feels like a lot of people could use just a pinch more stillness

I wholeheartedly agree.

I believe my mind plays tricks on me though. When I look back a few years, I remember periods of calm. But I suspect this might be an illusion, a case of selective memory. The truth is, a 100% calm life probably doesn’t exist. And if it did, it would probably be extremely boring. In reality, life feels more like a constant tug of war between chaos and calmness.

Michael Karnjanaprakorn has a really great blog that I highly suggest adding to your daily reads. Props to Matt Mazur for sharing a link to Michael’s blog.

Yesterday, Michael shared the following blog post: Calm Ambition. I really like this perspective. It serves as a good reminder to be on the lookout for false dichotomies.

You don’t have to follow the crowd. You don’t have to do what everyone else does. In this ongoing struggle, it’s important to pause occasionally and reflect. Ensure that the path you’re on aligns with your aspirations. If it doesn’t, don’t be afraid to adjust course. Remember, you have the power to shape your own journey.

Thanks for sharing Michael Karnjanaprakorn’s blog! Looks like a really relevant read. I’ve been reading Cal Newport’s Slow Productivity and feeling lots of the same feels you mention in this post!
